Exploring the Scenic Route: A Train Journey from Bangkok to Hua Hin
Getting from Bangkok to Hua Hin by train is a popular choice for both tourists and locals looking to explore the beautiful Royal Coast. This mode of transportation offers convenience, comfort, and stunning views along the way. In this guide, we will explore the journey from Bangkok to Hua Hin, highlighting the various options available, the approximate time it takes, and what to expect during the trip.
One of the most convenient ways to travel from Bangkok to Hua Hin is by train. Trains in Thailand are known for their affordability. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) operates regular trains between these two cities, making it easy to plan your journey. The new main railway station in Bangkok is located conveniently on the underground MRT network at Bang Sue to north of the city (Station BL11 on the map below), making it easily accessible for travelers.
As of late 2023, most trains heading south depart from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and take approximately four hours to reach Hua Hin. The Southern Line which services the Bangkok to Malaysia route goes via Hua Hin, Chumphon and Surat Thani. Trains depart from platforms 7 & 8 and arrive at platforms 11 & 12
More information about Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal is available here.
There are several train options available for the Bangkok to Hua Hin route. The most popular one is the ordinary rapid train, which is a non-air-conditioned service but provides a more authentic experience. The fares for this service are reasonably priced, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers.
For those who prefer a more comfortable journey, there are also air-conditioned trains available. These trains offer a slightly higher level of comfort, with well-maintained coaches and comfortable seating. The journey time remains similar to the ordinary rapid train, taking around four hours to reach Hua Hin.

As the train chugs away from Bangkok, the new railway tracks are elevated, and for many travelers using the new station for the first time they will be pleasantly surprised by the panoramic views of Bangkok they get as they arrive and depart. As you leave the city behind, passengers are treated to scenic views of the Thai countryside. The journey takes you through lush green fields, picturesque villages, and alongside beautiful rivers. The natural beauty of the landscape is truly mesmerizing, providing a serene and calming experience during your travels. The train journey also offers an opportunity to mingle with fellow travelers and locals. Thai people are known for their friendly and warm nature, so striking up conversations and making new friends is not uncommon.

When planning your trip, it’s essential to consider the train timings. The trains from Bangkok to Hua Hin operate several times throughout the day, allowing you to choose a departure time that suits your schedule. It is possible to book your tickets in advance to ensure availability, indeed this may be advisable during peak tourist seasons or holidays.
Note: Contrary to western practices, train tickets purchased online are 250 THB more expensive than train tickets purchased at the train station. The advantage of paying the extra fee is being able to guarantee your seat on the train in advance of the day of travel.

Upon arrival at Hua Hin, assuming your chosen accommodation does not offer a transfer service (many do) you will still need to get from the train station to Sam Roi Yot. Taxis are almost always waiting outside the station, usually on the left-hand side as you exit the station, so it should be very easy to find a taxi to take you to Sam Roi Yot, expect to pay around 1200 THB. The journey should take about an hour.

Alighting at Pranburi
Unlike Hua Hin, not all trains traveling south stop at Pranburi. Only the services detailed opposite currently stop there.
- 255 - Ordinary
- 31 - Special Express
- 169 - Rapid
Again, once you arrive at Pranburi assuming your chosen accommodation does not offer a transfer service you will still need to get from the train station to Sam Roi Yot. However, unlike Hua Hin this may be easier said than done. The options will probably be limited to songtheaw, motorcycle and Saleng (a motorcycle and sidecar arrangement usually with a sun/rain canopy) taxis. Although I am assured a songtheaw service runs every half hour, it is very informal and whilst it is likely that one will turn up eventually, a wait should be anticipated. The fare would need to be negotiated with the driver who is unlikely to speak much English and you should expect this journey to take about half an hour. This option is probably only for those people with an adventurous spirit or with previous experience of traveling in Thailand.

Overall, traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin by train offers an enjoyable and convenient experience. Whether you opt for the ordinary rapid train or the air-conditioned service, the journey promises beautiful views, friendly interactions, and a smooth ride. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the enchanting trip from Bangkok to Hua Hin.
