Mystical Phraya Nakhon Cave

Located in the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Phraya Nakhon Cave is an impressive and mystical natural cave that is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Thailand. This hidden gem is a paradise for nature-lovers and those who seek adventure, and it boasts an awe-inspiring skyline, lush greenery and beautiful beaches that offer scenic views of the Gulf of Thailand.

The Phraya Nakhon Cave is an absolute work of art. The cave was formed by the erosion of limestone, over several centuries, and the result is a breathtaking natural structure that is nothing short of a masterpiece. The cave has two chambers, the first of which is a dark and rocky chamber but the second one is the real star of the show. This chamber is open to the sky, allowing sunlight to penetrate and illuminate the beautiful space. This chamber, known as the Kuha Kharuehat Pavilion, houses a Hindu shrine which was built in 1890 by order of King Rama V, and it is believed that some of the pottery found in the cave is over 200 years old.

Praya Nakon Cave - Ban Phu Beach

To reach the cave from the carpark, visitors need to embark on a short hike through the verdant forest of the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. The southern route is a well-maintained trail, and while it is suitable for people of all ages, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for the trek. The hike takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the pace, and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Visitors can also observe the lush vegetation and the wildlife that inhabit the park during the hike, including several species of monkeys, birds and lizards.

Alternatively, it is possible to take a boat around the headland to the beach at Lam Sala. From there, there is a well worn path up the eastern approach to the cave entrance at the summit. This is a slightly easier and shorter approach than that direct from the carpark. For those without transport, it is very easy to hire a boat directly from Sam Roi Yot Beach, removing the need to travel overland to Ban Phu. Just talk to the fishermen on the beach or ask at one of the bars or your hotel.

Once visitors reach the cave’s entrance, the real adventure begins. The cave entrance is a small opening, where visitors need to clamber down a steep and rocky slope. The descent can be challenging, but it is worth it for the spectacular view that welcomes them. In the sunlit chamber, visitors can observe the rays of light penetrating the cave, highlighting its intricate structure and the vibrant colors of the foliage growing within.

  1. I’ve done it twice avoid the cliff walk to the beach it’s like walking on glass and dangerous. Get the boat cheap as chips. As written water etc and good boots don’t do sliders / flip flops.

Good restaurant at the base reasonably price. BUT CERTAINLY A MUST DO
